Prof Ahmed is a holder of PhD and Master of Philosophy (M.Phil/DEA) in Agricultural Sciences and Biological Engineering (Gembloux Agricultural University, Belgium), M.Phil Environmental Studies – Biological Sciences, BSc Forestry (Moi University, Kenya) and Diploma Forestry (Egerton University, Kenya). Currently, Prof. Ahmed is the Director of the Institute Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) of Garissa University since January 2020.

He is also an Associate Research Professor in Dryland Environment, Agriculture, Forestry & Natural Resources Management, Peacebuilding, Security & Conflict Management at IPSS and the School of Pure and Applied Sciences - Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and a Programme Leader for MSc. in Dryland Environment and Natural Resources Management.
